The Unfair Advantage · For Copywriters Sick Of Getting Ghosted

I've had an unfair advantage since 2007. You can have it this weekend.

There's a reason you're getting ghosted. Give me $29 and you'll be the copywriter clients stop ignoring.

You've put your best work in front of people who never wrote back.

You've emailed, DMed and pitch‑slapped strangers, only to get ghosted.

You joined the communities that told you to add thousands of people, "build relationships" with them, and post the same slop as everybody else.

And after months of trial and error, you've got nothing to show for it.

I got my unfair advantage with twenty dollars and a little website nobody asked me to build, and you can have your own version of it running by Sunday night.

Everybody in the room has read the same books you have.

The education hands you swipe files and formulas and then leaves you standing next to a hundred other writers holding the exact same thing.

  • ✕Studying the craft makes you identical to everyone else who studied it, which is the opposite of an advantage.
  • ✕Spec pieces never run, so they never once tell you whether your words did anything.
  • ✕You get asked for proof you can only get from clients, by clients who want proof first.
  • ✕So the only reps on offer are the ones you take on somebody else's budget.

A CEO told me the hardest part of his job is getting his creative team to think about something as simple as awareness levels.

You sit in the rooms where the good clients hang out, read every post, and never type a word, because there's nothing you can point at yet.

Twenty years of this, some of it in public

The best clients I've ever had came to me, and it was always for the same reason.

I'd already run the thing they were trying to do, in a little project of my own, before they ever heard my name.

So when I opened my mouth in a room full of people studying the same material, I was the one with numbers.

You can check most of it yourself.

"I've gotta come out and say it. I've never met anyone like you before and I'm not sure I ever will again."

David Garfinkel, host, on air

After we stopped recording, I told him I'd build a landing page that converted at 100% and write the book on copywriting. He said, "That's bold. Let's see it."

I built it that weekend. It got 201 visits and 198 emails, and the three that didn't were me, refreshing to check the numbers without filtering out my own IP.

I wrote the book, too.

What I did instead

The advantage is four moves, and I've been running them on repeat for twenty years.

1
Treat it like a hobby.Somebody else's product, a page, a few emails, and a few dollars of traffic, with nobody's invoice riding on the outcome.
2
Learn what your clients are learning.Whatever course or idea your market is buzzing about, you buy it and run it through your own project that same week.
3
Get good where it's cheap.Your favorite ideas die inside forty-eight hours and the survivors teach you what people actually stay for.
4
Show up in the rooms holding numbers. You skip the theory everyone else is debating and post what happened when you ran it, and the messages start arriving.

Everyone else in the room

Read the course, nod along, discuss the theory.

Wait for a client to supply the first real rep.

Find out what their words do on someone else's money.

You, after a weekend

Ran the course through a project of your own by Sunday.

Got the reps on twenty dollars and kept every one.

Walk into the room with something nobody can argue with.

A couple of the little sites I built for practice got noticed, and somebody offered to buy them.

→
Out
$12,500
sold for quick cash to people in a community I was already in

These days I build some of my playgrounds to sell, and it all started with that offer.

The same four moves, four times

It has paid me better every time I've run it.

In 2007 I had a baby on the way and a handful of sites that only paid if a stranger found them and bought something.

People in the SEO forums saw what my words were doing and started paying me, and those clients became a team of twenty-two writers.

In 2015, while half the market was laughing at Russell Brunson, I bought his training and ran every idea in it through my own project that week.

Then I posted my real numbers in his community, including what crashed, and ended up writing for clients in there for five years and for ClickFunnels itself for four.

Nobody in those rooms ever asked me for a portfolio, because they could already see what I knew.

Where it ends up

Twenty years of that is why one conversation was worth $25,000.

A woman's own clients had paid her $1.2 million, and she still couldn't make a single ad work.

A year and $100,000 with an agency had bought her a calendar full of calls that wouldn't close.

I looked at her archive once and saw ten or twelve pieces carrying her entire business, and every writer before me had walked right past them.

I told her to repost those same pieces, and eight days later she'd signed six new clients.

Then we spent $2,300 on ads built from her own words and booked calls at $43 apiece.

The campaign we built ran six months without me, and I pulled one week of it from her account.

In
$1,372
in ad spend that week
→
Out
$22,500
in revenue that same week

That one week brought in almost as much as the $25,000 she paid me.

"I never would have worked with you if I knew you were a copywriter."

She came looking for me, I wrote two pieces of copy the whole engagement, and the part she paid for was the seeing.

You can't get that eye out of a book, and I didn't. I got it from twenty years of watching my own pages work and fail where nobody was looking.

What the advantage does once you're carrying it

  • ✓Somebody in one of your rooms asks why their ads stopped working, and you answer with something you ran last weekend.
  • ✓The discovery call stops being an audition, because you pull up your own project and walk them through what it did.
  • ✓You spot the pieces carrying a business before the owner has finished explaining it to you.
  • ✓You get to test the idea a client would veto, so you already know the answer when it comes up.
  • ✓You name your fee and stay calm, because you've already been wrong a dozen times where nobody was watching.

How you get one

I build a playground on camera, and you build yours beside me.

Mine cost twenty bucks in 2007 and took me years by hand, and yours costs about the same and takes a weekend.

  • ✓Twelve modules where I build a real playground in the fly fishing niche and think every decision out loud.
  • ✓Your first live campaign finishes the same hour the videos do, with your name behind it.
  • ✓The eye that found her ten or twelve pieces, handed over as twelve videos you can play on a walk.
  • ✓Why believability beats persuasion on every call you'll ever take, and what that does to your writing.
  • ✓How to sort any business's content into what attracts, what warms people up, and what closes.
  • ✓Ten videos on carrying yourself like the writer who gets $25,000 for what others sell at $2,500.
  • ✓How to use samples and discovery calls without handing over the work for free.
  • ✓Which Playground, the prompt that picks your first market out of what you already read and buy for fun.
  • ✓The Page Kit, the same blocks this page is built from, so your weekend goes into the copy.
  • ✓The one module where you wrestle the tech, once, with me sitting there while you do it.

If you can set up an email account, you can do this.

Set up my playground — $29

Twenty-nine dollars, once, and it's yours to keep.

It's about four hours of video all in, which comes to seven dollars an hour for something you'll carry into every client you ever take.

I've been carrying mine for twenty years, so you can work out what the next twenty are worth to you.

"Does this work for somebody like me?"

A playground doesn't care what you call yourself or how long you've been at this. People running them include:

✍️ Freelance copywriters🧑‍💻 Agency writers🎓 Juniors with no portfolio📧 Email specialists🤖 AI-first writers🧠 Strategists🪄 Ghostwriters📱 Social writers🎯 Media buyers who write their own angles🏢 In-house marketers🔁 Writers with a full roster and no room to test

Clients want to see you can think. A playground is the easiest way to prove it with stories pulled directly from what you did this weekend, not what you did for a client 2 years ago.

In their words

What people said after seeing my work up close

Client · 2018

"I've never worked with a copywriter I didn't have to red pen before. I'm not sure how you did it dude, but this is awesome."

Alex Charfen
Founder, CHARFEN, Inc.
I was his COO · 2023–2024

"Hey man, those emails you wrote booked 27 calls this week. Replies are pouring in and sales are up. Nice work!"

Jon Chintanaroad
Founder, Recruiting Accelerator
Client · 2017–2019

"Hey, just a head's up, that sales page you wrote is converting at 19% and Jason's friends are emailing asking if he wrote it!"

Doland White
CEO, Rapid Crush, Inc.
Apprentice

"I just wanna carry myself the way you do."

An apprentice of mine
Said on a call, and I pointed him at a playground

Two of these were clients, one ran the company I worked for, and one is my apprentice. They're talking about me and my work, not this course, and none of it is a promise of what you'll get.

Put twenty-nine dollars next to what you'd otherwise spend this weekend on.

Option A

Read another course you've got nowhere to use, and go back to reading the room without posting.

Option B

Run that same course through a project of your own, and walk into the room on Monday holding a number.

Things people ask me right about here

Why is this only twenty-nine dollars?

My consulting clients pay my bills, so I teach this because I love the work and because I need writers I can trust with clients like her.

The more copywriters running playgrounds, the more of you there are to hand work to. You're not my competition.

What if I pick the wrong market?

There isn't one. Which Playground picks your first market out of what you already know and already buy.

If you don't like it you build the next one, and every rep you got comes with you.

I'm not technical. Can I do this?

If you can set up an email account you can do this. The tech sits inside one module, you do it alongside me, and you only do it once.

I don't have a free weekend.

Phase 1 is the only part you need to go live and it's about four hours, which spreads over a few weeknights just fine.

Do I need a product of my own?

No, you write for somebody else's product, the same way I do in the fly fishing build you'll be watching.

How much will traffic cost me?

Whatever you decide to put in. Your first visitors can come from posts you write yourself, or you can put a few dollars behind an ad when you want answers faster.

I already have clients. Why would I need this?

Client work fills your calendar, and a playground is where you test the ideas a client would veto.

It's also what makes your next rate conversation a much shorter one.

Will this conflict with my client contracts or NDAs?

No, it's your own project on your own domain, and if an NDA keeps you out of one niche you build in a different one.

Joshua Killingsworth

A note from me

I got all of this by treating the work like a hobby, on free time, with a few dollars and whatever I'd just learned.

Nobody's invoice was riding on it and nobody's patience was running out, which is why it stayed fun long enough for me to get good at it.

Then I went and stood in the rooms where the clients were, holding something I'd actually run, and I've never had to chase one since.

Grab the playground, block out Saturday morning, and build yours right alongside me.

Then email me when your first number comes in, because I want to hear about it.

P.S. James started his apprenticeship under me on New Year's Eve, and he wrote this in the foreword to my book:

"If you're reading these words right now, the wait is over. But until you feel it for yourself, you can borrow my belief. I've got more than enough to share."
